We will look at strengths such as focus, self-confidence, optimism, grit, resilience, and mental toughness, all of which have very obvious parts to play in delivering success at the 11+ exam. The various ways by which they can be acquired will be examined as well as whether helping to build pupils' strengths is something tutors could and should do in addition to their subject teaching.

Psychologists have long accepted the notion that underlying successful performance lies what they call efficacy beliefs. These are the beliefs we have about our competencies; the rest of the world calls these beliefs confidence. At its heart, building confidence is what tutoring is all about. But for 11 Plus pupils, confidence alone is not enough. This is why.

Examinations are a challenge; dealing successfully with a challenge demands that we feel strong as well as confident. In fact, in recent years, positive psychologists have recognised in challenging situations, strengths are just as vital as efficacy beliefs.

In this webinar, the concept of strengths will be explored. We will look at strengths such as focus, self-confidence, optimism, grit, resilience, and mental toughness, all of which have very obvious parts to play in delivering success at the 11 Plus exam. We will examine various ways by which they can be acquired; and ask whether helping to build pupils’ strengths is something tutors could and should do in addition to their subject teaching.
